Why You Need A Side Hustle

Why You Need To Start A Side Hustle Today

I believe everyone needs a side hustle.

Something you do outside your 9 to 5 job to keep your life exciting, keep your mind sharp, and maybe even earn some extra income.

What is a side hustle, and why do you need one? Here are the reasons why I have side hustles, plus a list of side hustle ideas and the things I do to make extra money from home part time.Times are changing and many have more than one job or a side hustle. A growing percentage of millennials are going for a second job or side gig. It could be for many reasons, for the money or for getting experience in a field or just for the fun. But experts argue that having a side hustle is even more important if you’re a woman.

According to a CareerBuilder research, more women are taking on side hustles than men (35 percent vs. 28 percent) to help bridge the pay gap, and those under 35 are more likely to have a side hustle than those over 35.

Fact is that everyone’s reason for side hustling is different, but the ultimate goal is the same – to create an additional stream of income.

And let’s be honest, wouldn’t it be nice to make more money every month?

First things first: what exactly is a side hustle?

A side hustle technically is:

“A gig apart from your 9-5 that not only brings in money but also allows you the flexibility to work your full time, regular job.”

— LAUREN GREUTMAN

A side hustle is basically anything you do in addition to your main job to make some extra money. It also goes by the name side job, side gig, side project, second job, and many more.

Side hustle might be a recent term, but the concept is nothing new. People have been working more than one job forever. More traditional side hustles might include bartending, babysitting, dog walking, cleaning or delivering pizzas – anything you can pick up in shifts to work around your main job.

One thing that is quite new is that nowadays, more and more people are turning to the internet to side hustle.

The internet makes a second income accessible in a way that it never has been before. There are so many different side hustles that you can do online, from home, at a time to suit you.

There’s also the relatively new concept of the sharing economy. This refers to companies like Uber and AirBnB, which allow people to make money by sharing their services or resources with strangers.

This means there is really no excuse for not starting a side hustle. Even if you only have one hour spare a week, I guarantee there is something you can be doing to make money!

Now consider these three common goals of side hustles from the book Side Hustle: From Idea to Income in 27 Days:

  1. Make extra cash for a specific purpose, whether to pay off a student loan, build up your emergency fund, or just take a vacation.

  2. Create an ongoing source of income that makes a real difference in your quality of life.

  3. Replace or exceed the income from your regular job.

Does any speak to you? If not, you might still want to give side hustles a try.

Why it’s a good idea to have your own side hustle – even if you love your job

Even if you love your job or can’t stand it, you should have a side hustle; in addition to the extra income, your experience in starting your own project produces an extraordinary benefit: a recognition of your skills and value.

A side hustle can provide a creative outlet.

It’s amazing to think how many people drift into soul-destroying jobs they can’t stand in order to pay the bills, or because they just need to get ‘something’ fast after graduating.

Maybe you have to stick with your uninspiring job because it’s a steady income, or you’re saving for the future, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy to deal with; especially if it’s unfulfilling and wastes your talents.

If that’s you, then maybe a side hustle where you can indulge your passion and grow your skills will be for you.

Never underestimate how important a creative outlet is, to escape the monotony of your day job and stop you from going crazy.

A side hustle is probably the most effective safety net against life’s ups and downs.

In 2016, research by Shelter found that one third of UK working families were only one paycheck away from losing their home. Similar research in the US found that over half of Americans had less than $1,000 to their name.

Do you? How long could you survive if you lost your job?

It’s not nice to think about, but if you one have one source of income, you are 100% at the mercy of your boss, your company and the economy. A side hustle can provide that essential buffer just in case everything goes pear shaped at your day job.

Side hustles can also be more important for women, who tend to be more vulnerable in the workplace as I wrote about here.

It’s likely you have more free time than you think

Life is busy, I get it.

There never feels like there is enough time in the day to accomplish all you need and want to do. This may be legitimate in your case, or it may be a mirage. Often, our time management skills are terrible. We constantly find ourselves running around, 5 minutes late to everything because we don’t keep track of time.

Creating a daily schedule to stick to is necessary to properly delegate our time. Just as a budget tells our money where to go, a daily schedule puts us in charge of our time.

Many of us stare at our cell phones mindlessly playing games and scrolling through the thousands of selfies we see on Facebook. The point is, many of us spend a great deal of time wasting time…

Here’s 20 tips on better time management.

Side hustles destroy debt at a rapid rate

Can you imagine how much debt you could pay off if you made an extra $500 a month? I hear constant complaints from people who wish they made more money in their daily job and complain about the lack of raises. They may put in an application for a better paying job, but in the meantime, why not get a second part-time job to increase your income?

I know, an extra job sounds insane but I’m not talking about working 20 extra hours a week. You could have a part-time job that you work each week for 5 hours. That one part-time job could pay for yearly vacations, savings toward a new vehicle, an extra house payment, or just “fun money.”

By only working 5 extra hours a week, you could be able to put yourself in a much better financial position rather than complaining about your current rate of pay and doing nothing about it. You can’t rely on your job to increase your pay – you need to take control yourself and increase it.

Living paycheck to paycheck is killing you

How much financial stress do you have at the end of each month, or daily for that matter? That high amount of stress builds up cortisol in your body which can lead to heart disease and other life-altering conditions.

Do you really think 5-8 hours extra a week to relieve your financial pressure is going to kill you faster than doing nothing about it? If your budget is a problem, remember to set one up!

Build Wealth

Is your retirement saving where you want it to be? If not, it may be a great idea to work a few extra hours each week to increase that account. People often associate side hustles with debt elimination, but side jobs can rapidly increase your wealth as you save and invest the extra money.

Freedom!

If you budget your regular income and live within your means, the amount of freedom you get from a side job is huge. All of that money is extra to accomplish your financial goals so much quicker. As I stated earlier, your extra money could go toward your house payment, vacations, fun money, or a new car fund.

Pick ideas that actually work

All side hustles begin with a simple idea, and ideas are all around you!

Here’s a list that can help you get started with yours:

  • Offer online tutoring or coaching in your field of expertise

  • Manage social media accounts for small business

  • Be a virtual assistant

  • Sign up with Lyft, Uber, or Airbnb (there’s a sharing economy app for everything these days)

  • Self-publish books or create an ebook, and then sell them

  • Become a home organizer

  • Launch an eCourse (or online course)

  • Take pictures

  • Publish a blog, and sign up to referral programs (if I can do it, you can too!)

The thing is to be on the lookout for feasible, persuasive and profitable ideas, and you’ll be able to transform them into an asset.

What side hustle you start is entirely up to you. Do you love photography in your free time? Try starting a small business charging people for family photos. Do you love dogs? People pay good money for dog walking services. The point is, you have the option of doing what you love while making a little extra money on the side. All you have to do is find a way to add value to someone’s life if you’re looking for ideas.

Your side hustle might lead you to finally discover what truly makes your heart happy. If you aren’t satisfied in your career, then a side hustle will at least give you a good distraction.

It could also lead you to a different career from your chosen field; one that you had never imagined, or never imagined you could make money from.

You could find a hidden talent for sales, social media or making, that changes your whole career path. Plus, if it’s based on your side hustle, it’s more likely to be something that you actually enjoy rather than just fall into by accident.

Who knows, your side hustle could take off and become your career!

Bringing it all together

“More money means more options. More options equal freedom.”

— CHRIS GUILLEBEAU

A side hustle is not just about putting extra cash in your pocket. It affords you the ability to decide.

When you have multiple paychecks from different sources, you no longer depend on a single employer.

Once you start side hustling, you’ll embrace a lifestyle that will be with you for a long time.

Continue to experiment, learn, and improve.

It’s amazing how many people sleepwalk through the work-home grind for years on end without ever looking at the bigger picture of what they want out of life.

The kind of goal-setting and planning you’ll undertake with a side hustle will make you look at so many areas of your life; what you want and what you’re working towards.

The phrase side hustle still sounds a little ‘scammy’ to me, but the reality is that having any side project will focus your life and goals in ways that take you far beyond financial aspirations.

It’s not just for people who want to get out of the rat race or quit a job they hate (but it certainly helps). Besides straight-up money-making, side hustles will benefit your life in ways that are still waiting to be discovered.
