Have you ever thought that you would be a great email marketer if you could just design the perfect email template or craft the perfect subject title?
Well, there’s good news. Both of those thoughts are myths.
And even more good news, you probably believe the other five myths that I’m covering today.
Switching your mindset and not believing these myths can help you expand and grow your reach as an online entrepreneur.
So let the mythbusting begin!
Myth #1: Bigger is always better
The bigger your email list, the better your chance for success.
Why is this a myth?
Good question. There are several reasons, but let’s think of your email list in terms of quality over quantity.
Having a huge list can be expensive. Most email platforms charge by the number of subscribers. So it makes smart business and financial sense to ask yourself a few questions about your list.
How engaged are the members of your list?
How often are they opening their emails?
How often are they clicking on the links inside the emails?
How many days pass before they open your latest email?
The answers to these questions will help inform you as to whether your list is actually engaged with you and your message. You may find out that the the majority of your list aren’t actually engaged in what it is you’re offering. If that’s the case, you are spending money on inactive people who will never become a customer.
Very small lists can be super popular and profitable if your email subscribers are engaged with you and really represent your ideal client.
Myth #2: Never recycle
Maybe you were told not to recycle previous emails or old content from your blog posts.
Want to know the truth?
Repurposing old content is a GREAT way to get new eyes on your old work.
You can update and change your keywords, headlines and images. Resending old emails can also get new engagement, especially if it’s one of the first emails you ever wrote. You could be getting thousands of fresh eyes on your message and content. This is also a great time to review your previous work and make minor changes or create a new point of emphasis. You might even find a spark of inspiration hidden in those old emails that is worthy of a new blog post or product offering. Don’t worry about the people who might actually remember that first email you sent, the numbers will be very small.
Don’t forget to always include links to your website, blog posts, and social media! Connect with your subscribers. Ask open-ended questions and really be engaged.
Myth #3: Make it pretty
An email with an amazing template design and layout is more important than the content.
Not so fast!
I use Convertkit because they have been rated to have the highest email delivery and open rates compared to other automated email delivery systems.
Why is that?
ConvertKit sends plain text emails by default. Yes, you can add images and great looking templates to your emails if you want, but mostly it’s plain text. The more images and graphics that are in your emails, the more likely those emails are going to be “flagged” as SPAM. Your potential clients can’t take advantage of your latest tidbits of wisdom or sign up for your new course if your email is buried in their SPAM folder.
Instead, grow your email list substantially by creating Opt In ‘Lead Boxes’ on Leadpages or Clickfunnels which then automatically adds people to your ConvertKit, or other email automation tool, email list. Fill your emails with valuable content that resonates with your audience and keeps them interested and engaged. Content is King!
Myth #4: Unsubscribes equals failure
You should be upset when people unsubscribe. You must be doing something wrong.
Honestly, I believe this to be a mindset issue.
People who Unsubscribe from your content are not your target market. They were never going to buy from you anyway. These people are actually doing you a favor. You will save time and money with Unsubscribes. Remember, the sales funnel process is all about narrowing your potential audience down to those ideal clients that are actively engaged with you and your offerings and are ready, willing, and able to buy. Why would you want to invest hard earned money and valuable personal time to promote to people who aren’t interested in investing in you?
If you do take this a little personally, I encourage you to remember that the people that are subscribed LOVE what you are sharing and have a high chance of purchasing a product from you. Nurture THOSE relationships and say “Thank you” to the Unsubscribers.
Myth #5: FREE means SPAM
Using the word ‘FREE’ will mark your content as SPAM.
I can tell you from my personal experience that using the word ‘free’ in your subject lines does not decrease open rates or get you marked as spam.
In fact, both MailChimp and Hubspot have confirmed that using words like “free” in your subject line has zero effect on your email deliverability.
Remember that what qualifies as “spam” in the email filtering algorithms changes often. What actual people mark as ‘spam’ has a much bigger influence over the ‘spam’ list, so you may want to check it out every so often. This could ensure that your deliverability and open rates remain above industry standards.

Believing these myths can hinder your growth because, if you believe them, you could be limiting the number of ideal clients you are attracting to, and staying in, your list. You may be spending more money than you need on cold subscribers who have no intention of becoming your client. You may also be getting really upset when people unsubscribe instead of feeling grateful for your engaged subscribers and being proud of the amazing content that you are providing.
